Big tech layoffs continue as AI looms

The move adds to signs that job cuts will continue this year, as companies look to adopt artificial intelligence software and automation to lighten workloads

From the beginning of this month, tech players have been announced round of lay offs one after the other.

Twitch cut about 500 employees which amounts to about third of its staff, while parent company Amazon fired hundreds of people from its Amazon Prime Video and MGM Studio divisions.

Discord also announced layoffs which affected about 170 people (17 per cent of its staff)

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that Google laid off hundreds of employees in its advertising sales team. According to Reuters, the move adds to signs that job cuts will continue this year, as companies look to adopt artificial intelligence software and automation to lighten workloads.

Google has laid off several employees across its voice assistant units, hardware teams for Pixel, Nest and Fitbit and AR team.

More jobs cuts are expected to come at the Google offices. On Wednesday, The Verge reported that Google CEO Sundar Pichai told employees to expect more layoffs in an internal memo.

In the report Pichai indicated that the layoffs would not affect all teams. He also implied that the layoffs were a part of them shifting their focus to their big priorities.

Pichai said in the memo, “These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team. We have ambitious goals, and will be investing in our big priorities this year.”

Gaming developer Riot Games also announced layoffs which would affect 11 per cent of its staff.
