The percentage of TikTok users who regularly access news via the app rose to 43 per cent in 2023 from 22 per cent a year earlier, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center.
News agency Reuters has reported that according to research atleast half of the US Adults receive some form of news from social media platforms.
TikTok as a platform is known to cater to the younger generations, the Millennial and Gen Z audiences.
Reuters also reported that news organisations are competing with TikTok and other social media platforms for younger consumer’s attention and advertisers’ budgets.
30 per cent of the survey respondents said that they regularly accessed news on Facebook, while 26 per cent said they used YouTube instead.
Following the two platforms were Instagram with 16 per cent and TikTok with 14 per cent, according to Pew results.
However, Reuters also reported that Meta has been attempting to reduce the frequency of news on its platforms
Especially, given the regulatory pressure it has faced in key markets around the world, in the recent years.
The study by Pew also found that regular news consumers on Nextdoor, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok are more likely to be women.
While regular news consumers on Reddit, X, LinkedIn and Alphabet-owned YouTube are more likely to be men.
Elon Musk’s platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has political divisions in its news consumers.
The platform’s users are 46 per cent Republican or Republican-leaning, while 49 per cent are Democrat or Democratic-leaning,
Pew’s research was conducted based on a survey of 8,842 U.S. adults conducted in Sept 2023.
