To celebrate and honour Emirati Women’s Day, Spotify is turning over its Guest List playlist to Emirati female artists, Balqees and Almas. The playlist features songs personally selected by these artists, reflecting what inspires them as Emirati women of today.
The lively mix of English and Arabic songs will set female fans on a galvanizing journey ahead of August 28th with the playlist featuring Balqees’ favourite girl power anthems including Aretha Franklin’s “I Will Survive” and Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings”. Taking listeners through the decades, Almas has included songs by legendary bands like The Beatles and Pink Floyd as well as current hits such as Marwan Pablo’s “Free” and her own release Qoyoud, about being unapologetically you.
Balqees and Almas serve as inspiring figures from different generations. Spotify teamed up with both artists as an acknowledgement of the impact they have as cultural creators and advocates for equality.
Balqees, a phenomenal singer and a leading voice for women in the region has frequently spoken about women empowerment and has used her platform to raise awareness and tackle domestic violence with the #DontCoverUp campaign. A landmark achievement that serves as a driver for Emirati women, as well as women in the Arab World, is the unveiling of her star on the walkway of the Dubai Stars at downtown Dubai and a wax figure at Madame Tussauds.
Speaking about her choice of tracks on Spotify’s Guest List, Balqees said, “These songs boost my energy and make me feel empowered and that I’m ready to face the world with all my strength and preserve my career and life.”
Complementing the icon’s message of empowerment is the rising star Almas. Almas represents a new generation of women in the Middle East and North Africa. The young Emirati prodigy was part of the inaugural ‘class’ of Spotify’s women in music initiative SAWTIK created for the region. A true inspiration to emerging female artists, Almas aspires to see more women pursuing a career in music and expressing themselves through it.
”I believe women are just like diamonds, strong, resilient, and always shining. The additions to this playlist are very personal as these are some tunes that make me feel just that, they drive me to accomplish anything I can dream of,” Almas added.
