Tom Hanks has warned fans that a dental plan ad that appears to be fronted by him is actually an AI fake.
The Hollywood actor posted the warning on his Instagram account, where he has 9.5 million followers
“There’s a video out there promoting some dental plan with an AI version of me,” Hanks wrote.
“I have nothing to do with it,” he added. The ad was for a dental plan.
The Oscar-winning actor has spoken previously about the ‘artistic challenge’ that AI poses in the film industry.
As AI tools grow more sophisticated there is a fear more ‘deepfake’ ads will appear, mimicking celebrities across film, TV, music and sport.
Deepfakes can create realistic virtual versions of real people and have been used to make videos, social media posts and ads.
There are also deepfakes examples in the world of politics, with former US President Donald Trump and current Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelensky among those targeted.
Last month, Google announced it would require any political adverts that ran on its platform to disclose if they had been created with AI.
Recently, Google-owned YouTube unveiled a range of upcoming AI-powered capabilities at its Made On YouTube event.
The features will help both new and established creators and artists globally including the Middle East and North Africa to create, edit and share content in new ways.
