The enduring spirit of the Hard Rock Cafe Dubai at 25

The early years were marked by memorable events that included belly dancing and even encounters with music legend, Michael Jackson

Hard Rock Cafe has been a beloved landmark in Dubai for 25 years, starting from its opening on December 13, 1997. Originally situated in a prime spot near the American University of Dubai, just behind Media City.

During the late ’90s and early 2000s, when much fewer local options existed for drinks and entertainment, Hard Rock Cafe Dubai thrived as a hub for socializing and live music.

It was the go-to spot for after-work gatherings, live music, and happy hours.

As the city developed, with new neighborhoods like Media City and The Greens emerging, the cafe remained a central, non-hotel-affiliated venue.

The early years were marked by memorable events that included belly dancing and even encounters with music legend, Michael Jackson.

Nada Hayati, one of the General Managers who has been with the cafe for 25 years, says: “We were all seated and eating in the staff room just before the sound check and suddenly we turn to see Michael Jackson just walking past in with the café management and heading to the restaurant.

“Everyone’s faces dropped as they watched Michael casually walking by! And yes, we did serve Michael his Tupelo Chicken and Pepsi, while he was checking his memorabilia that he donated years ago to Hard Rock International.

“Michael also signed his shoes that are still displayed in our café now located in Dubai Festival City.”.

The Hard Rock Dubai community was strong, evident in events like summer raffles for trips to the Maldives and collaborations showcasing Harley Davidsons inside the cafe.

In 2009, on Mother’s Day, the cafe closed its doors for demolition, leading to a strong local response.

The building’s tear-down made the community put together a petition to stop it, underlining the emotional connection people had with the cafe and its iconic crossed guitars.

After a year-long closure, the cafe reopened in Festival City, retaining 80% of its staff.

Now with its new location in Festival City, it’s definitely one of the prime reasons people visit this part of town.

To celebrate Hard Rock Dubai’s 25th anniversary, there will be a performance by Emirati soul R&B singer Abri, the brand’s first Arab ambassador.

The brand now in Dubai has become associated as one of the major local concert destinations.

In 2018 Hard Rock Cafe opened its doors in Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport. The cafe, brimming with the spirited essence that defines the brand, provides travelers with a lasting and memorable experience just before they depart from Dubai.

Tom Perez, Vice President of Franchise Operations, Hard Rock International, said: “We are currently working on expanding the Hard Rock Cafe family in the United Arab Emirates with Hard Rock Cafe Middle-East, Inc, our long-standing partner, to bring new concepts and brand extensions to its Hard Rock fans in UAE”.

The brand has evolved internationally, encompassing entertainment arenas, casinos, and hotels.

It speaks the language of music, sports, and inclusivity, resonating consistently across its restaurants worldwide.

The 25th anniversary celebrations include a free concert by Emirati singer Abri on November 23rd and a specially designed t-shirt by Abri will be shown, with proceeds benefiting the Al Jalila Foundation.

The cafe invites fans to enjoy three iconic dishes, also for free, as a prelude to the event—The legendary burger, famous nachos, and infamous brownie.
