Campaign’s Creative Faces to Watch 2020 – Joe Russel, Head of content, John Brown Media

Seif Kandil, business director, John Brown Media: At a very young age, Joe leads one of the highest impact brands in the John Brown portfolio of client, Emirates. He leads an overseas team of five people that produce three key content projects for Emirates and, unlike the common digital content that has a short life span, all three projects are print, which makes errors far less forgivable. He sees the process from initiation through to production, achieving growth for both the client’s business and the company.

Career highlights

  • Progressing from sub editor to head of content within five years.
  • The Jaguar I-PACE educational content pitch – first start-to-finish lead on a pitch proposal and delivery.
  • Asian Paints catalogue – first time leading content direction and execution of a book for a market outside the UAE (India).
  • Interviewing two-Michelin-starred chef Bjorn Frantzen for the Spinneys magazine.
  • Working with a wide range of creatives and personalities, finding ways to communicate and collaborate with each of them.

Guiding principles

To be responsible for my own work output and time management, to be open with and supportive of my team, and to have a work ethic that leads by example.

Dream job

On my current career path: creative director, or editor on a food magazine. Eventually I would like to return to London, but in the meantime I have considered living in Taiwan or trying to move to the States.

On an alternative path: a roaming author writing about food and culture.

Side hustle

I don’t currently make money on the side. However, one out-of-work passion is to climb and explore lesser-known places, which I’d like to write about for publications.
