This year, we’ve witnessed several noteworthy trends that reflect the evolving preferences and behaviours of consumers worldwide, especially within the streaming sector.
These trends, from personalised content experiences to the surge in original programming and live streaming events, highlight the dynamic nature of the industry and the importance of staying agile and responsive to audience needs.
Navigating the trendscape
We place considerable importance on thorough market research to understand the rich diversity of this region, encompassing traditional values alongside modern trends.
This deep understanding enables us to craft content that not only entertains but also resonates with the emotions of our viewers throughout the Middle East.
Blending global and local content is crucial in creating a more meaningful and relatable entertainment experience for our audiences, as it allows us to connect on a deeper level with their cultural backgrounds, values, and preferences.
We curate a diverse range of global entertainment, including blockbuster movies like Barbie and Dune, and popular TV shows such as Gold Rush and Teen Titans Go!, while also investing in original productions such as Kitchen Tales and Matbakh Manal Al Alem that celebrate the unique culture, history, and storytelling traditions of each region.
Another essential aspect of our strategy is building strong partnerships and collaborations with local creators, talent, and production companies to enhance the content experience in the Middle East.
Our recent collaboration with SRMG resulted in the creation of Asharq Discovery, an innovative Arabic-language platform offering a wide range of high-quality content from Warner Bros. Discovery tailored specifically for Middle Eastern viewers—all available for free.
Exploring the future of streaming
The rapid growth of digital streaming services is reshaping our content experience in the Middle East. The desire for easy access to on-demand entertainment is fueling the expansion of digital platforms.
Here are some of the trends that are expected to be witnessed in the following year.
Growth of the Digital Wave
People want easy access to entertainment whenever they want it, and this has led to more digital platforms offering a wide range of content options. As subscription-based services, ad-supported models, and hybrid platforms vie for our attention, the landscape is becoming more diverse.
Our OSN partnership has been pivotal in the evolving streaming landscape. Collaborating with OSN by making them the Home of HBO content in MENA and adding Fatafeat and Cartoon Network wasn’t just a strategic move—it was about improving the viewing experience for audiences across the MENA region. We recognised the importance of adapting to the rise of digital platforms and on-demand viewing.
Producing more local and original content
There has been a rising demand for culturally relevant content that speaks to the heart of the Middle East’s unique culture and stories. Creating original productions that highlight the region’s rich heritage, values, and contemporary stories is crucial for nurturing stronger connections with our local viewers.
Our pride and joy in 2023 was creating Escape Kitchen, a one-of-a-kind show that resonated with audiences, earning us the prestigious Broadcast Pro award for Best Unscripted Production.
This success has fueled our passion to continue producing content that not only entertains but also educates and celebrates the diversity of our region. We believe that producing more local and original content is crucial in the region as it strengthens cultural identity, promotes inclusivity, and fosters a deeper connection with our viewers.
The entertainment landscape in the Middle East is on the cusp of transformative growth. Producing localised and original content and focusing on digital growth are just some of the key trends shaping the future of streaming.
It’s clear that the streaming landscape will continue to evolve, driven by innovation, creativity, and a deep understanding of audience preferences.
