Alex was most recently leading new e-commerce developments at Condé Nast, and before that for several years was overseeing websites and apps at The Walt Disney Company as their Digital Product Director for EMEA. He was also previously the Digital Platforms Director at regional UK publisher Johnston Press. Before that, Alex worked at the BBC for over a decade, including as the first Social Media Editor for BBC News, launching their presence on Facebook & Twitter in 2010, and managing their curation of user-generated content on TV, radio & online. He also spent several years as Editor of the BBC Sport website, having been an integral part of its launch back in 2000.

Alex Gubbay said: “Joining The National and moving to Abu Dhabi from the UK is a great professional and personal opportunity. I am excited to work with a strong team, and hopefully, build on the digital foundations already in place to drive the reach and impact of our journalism.”

Mina Al-Oraibi, Editor in Chief, The National states: “Alex is a brilliant addition to our newsroom; he brings years of journalistic experience and a track record of digital excellence. We have exciting plans ahead with Alex at the helm of our digital strategy”.
