TikTok plans to label AI-generated images and videos

It will use a digital watermark known as ‘Content Credentials’ to alert users.

TikTok says it plans to start labelling AI-generated images and videos that were made on other platforms.

The video-sharing platform already labels AI-generated content made with tools inside the app, but the latest move would apply a label to videos and images generated outside of the service.

“We also have policies that prohibit realistic AI that is not labelled, so if realistic AI (generated contents) appears on the platform, then we will remove it as violating our community guidelines,” Adam Presser, head of operations and trust and safety at TikTok, said in an interview.

The ‘Content Credentials’ technology was spearheaded by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, a group co-founded by Adobe, Microsoft and others.

It has already been adopted by the likes of ChatGPT creator OpenAI, while YouTube, Google, and Meta Platforms have also said they plan to use Content Credentials, according to Reuters news agency.

If a creator posts content on TikTok that was created with a service like OpenAI’s DALL·E 3, it will automatically have an “AI-generated” label attached to it to notify viewers that it was created with AI.

The Content Credentials metadata will include details on where and how the AI-generated content was made or edited and will remain attached to the content when downloaded.
