UAE’s Radio 1 and Radio 2 pulled from air after Gulf News Broadcasting loses licence

United Arab Emirates radio stations Radio 1 and Radio 2 have been pulled off air due to a dispute over the frequency licenses, it has been alleged.

Owner Abu Dhabi Media has reclaimed the licence for the two radio stations from the current managers Gulf News Broadcasting, a source close to GNB told Campaign anonymously.

GNB refused to confirm or deny the claims and ADM has also refused to comment.

Listeners complained last week that the stations were off-air, with some claiming an Abu Dhabi classical music station was playing instead.

Campaign understands that a music loop has been implemented to fill the void of DJ talks and advertising.

In a statement issued last week, GNB said the blackout was due to ‘technical issues’.

“Gulf News Broadcasting apologises for any inconvenience caused due to the interrupted service to Radio 1 and Radio 2 stations. This is due to a transmission issue which we anticipate will be resolved shortly,” it stated.
