I recommend Mariam as a face to watch and a lucid brain to get to know and an unstoppable power to be inspired by every day. As a senior writer at Vice, Mariam keeps amazing us with an outstanding can-do attitude that turns everything she dabbles with to a fun and exciting journey. She launches cities and destinations, innovates with podcasts ideas and ventures into challenging stereotypes and flipping biased narratives, all that with a baby on her shoulders and while having fun. And that is just admirable and exciting to watch.

Career highlights

As a child, I was painfully shy and quiet. You’d never hear me say more than a couple words at a time. What people couldn’t see, were the never-ending words swirling around inside my head, telling stories and painting pictures. That hasn’t changed.

From working on award-winning campaigns for Always and Abaad during my time at Leo Burnett Beirut, to carving a place inside culture with Vice today on brands such as STA and Anghami, as well as having personal pieces published, that little girl inside me would be proud she finally learnt to share her words and stories with those around her.

Guiding principles

Ask myself, “would I read this, watch this, listen to this?” if the answer is no then I’m doing something wrong and need to make the necessary changes.

There are infinite angles and ways to tell one story. Find the one that’s most human.

Move with the times or you’ll get left behind.

Side hustle

While I’m not changing my one and half year-old son’s poop-filled diapers, I’m writing a children’s book inspired by his hilarious personality. It’s currently being illustrated and will be published by the end of the year – stay tuned!
