Campaign’s PR Faces to Watch 2020 – Imaan Jooma, Senior account executive, Apco Dubai
Sharon Alvares, Senior account director, Apco Dubai: Imaan is a communications professional with more than four and a half years’ experience in public relations. Over the past one and a half years at ApcoWorldwide she has been a core part of the public relations and media relations team for some of Apco’s key clients. Time and time again, Imaan has demonstrated her dedication to learn and absorb as much as possible from her peers and is always willing to immerse herself in new and challenging tasks. She has anticipated client needs and taken on full responsibility for independent projects: namely, Companies for Good and Africa Fashion Week Middle East. She may be quiet, but she is a powerhouse when it comes to delivering results and always ensures that her deliverables are of a high standard. Imaan has also proven to be a key member of the editorial team, lending her support to some of UAE’s key events including the World Government Summit, First Global Dubai and GITEX Technology Week.
My career started in 2015 when I interned for a consultancy that focused on telling Africa’s story. My educational background wasn’t focused on PR, so I believe I have grown immensely. I have worked with clients across an array of industries such as fashion, tech, education and science in Africa as well as the Middle East. I have also been promoted multiple times and was put as a lead on one of the most fascinating accounts that I have ever worked on, which was a soap factory that was turned into an innovation hub, located in one of Angola’s largest slums. At Apco I was grateful to be picked as one of the team’s editorial members for the World Government Summit – one of Dubai’s key platforms for leaders in the public and private sectors – as well as The First Global Challenge, a yearly Olympics-style robotics competition organised by the International First Committee Association.
It is important to step out of your comfort zone, because that is when growth really happens.
As clichés as it may sound, a job that allows me to travel to as many places as I could as can, since I love traveling and learning about different cultures.
I currently don’t have a side hustle but would like to get into one that involves my creative side. Hopefully that’ll happen this year.
