Campaign’s Creative Faces to Watch 2024 – Abdelrahman Gad, Art Director, Leo Burnett UAE

Abdelrahman, or Abdo, is an art director/designer by day, artist by night, and a font fanatic all the time.

When he isn’t dreaming up new things to do with typography, Abdo runs workshops for the region’s design community at Al Serkal or in his hometown of Cairo.

Putting his passion for type and social impact to good use, Abdo lit up the stage at Dubai Lynx with powerful entries like Zael and Maqroo that helped bring home a Grand Prix along with a haul of other precious metals – showcasing just how powerful design can be when applied with a greater purpose. 

Career highlights

Abdo, an award-winning art director and type designer, won this year’s Grand Prix for Maqroo, the first Arabic Dyslexic Font. Chances are you’ve used his fonts or seen them on Nike Football World Cup jerseys.

His work has been recognised by D&AD, the Art Directors Club and design magazines like Eye on Design and It’s Nice That.

He is an asset to all the teams, bringing his infectious smile and enthusiasm to whatever you might throw at him.

Guiding principles

Curiosity and hard work form the bedrock of creativity. Though Abdo comes from a specialist background, he is fuelled by a quest for learning, fostering an open-mindedness that welcomes new insights and diverse perspectives.

Side hustle

Abdo’s main side hustle is his type foundry, “Boharat,” which ranks among the top three Arabic-type foundries in the region.

He leads a series of Arabic typography workshops that have reached four countries in the region, where he teaches the aesthetics of Arabic letters.
