Al Jazeera’s Wadah Khanfar steps down

Wadah Khanfar has resigned as director-general of Al Jazeera, the Doha-based pan-Arab satellite broadcaster.

He leaves after eight years in the role, with him citing a “desire to move on” as a reason for his departure. In his resignation letter which has been published online by Foreign Policy, Khanfar says: “Upon my appointment, the Chairman and I set a goal to establish Al Jazeera as global media leader and we have agreed that this target has been met and that the organisation is in a healthy position.”

It is believed, though unconfirmed, that he will be replaced by Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim al-Thani, who will reportedly leave his position at Qatargas.
