I blame the judges, Yasser. That’s why The One Show and in a way D@AD are still the awards to win. At least ONE juror at those awards would say, ‘hey, hasn’t this been done before?’ But how many ads that have been done before win at Cannes? Loads. And Lynx speaks for itself. These Lynx juries, supposedly our peers and I haven’t even heard of most of them, aren’t following the work. They seem to just be OK with the five-star accommodation and booze.

This part of the world is full of complexities.

Sex without marriage is illegal yet condoms and other sex aid materials are everywhere. Alcohol is illegal yet hotel doors are open for everyone. Protestation is illegal yet it’s well organized in 5-stars hotels and even nearly published using business cards and online. Dah!

Not trying to be an apologist, but if you knew anything about advertising, you would know that it’s perfectly fine (and often more effective) to not mention the brand or the product until the last second… As long as the narrative is relevant and meaningful to the product or brand, the effectiveness of a film in communicating a message which might strongly position the product or brand does not rely on showing the product or brand early in the copy. Fadi is not in Saudi.

He is in the BBDO Dubai offices and word is, his path of destruction has just started….

Step 1: Create a TVC for a major FMCG that does not showcase the product or the brand until the very last second.

Step 2: Create a new icon for the said FMCG in a shape resembling a 6 pointed star.

Word is said client is not a happy camper right now.

That is all good to hear, I think the industry started to realise the importance of having original creative Arabic writers.

I agree with Ali as well, the background of the client (judging) the copy plays a major role.
